President Donald Trump said in the latest interview that he is strongly considering pulling the US out of NATO after the security alliance failed to support the United States in its war against Iran.
As reported WireTrump criticized the usefulness of the alliance, calling it a “paper tiger”. In view of the lack of action from allies, Trump insisted that “withdrawing the US from the defense treaty is now beyond reconsideration.”
Donald Trump’s rejection of a request for allies to deploy warships to the Strait of Hormuz marks a significant shift in transatlantic relations.
It is the clearest sign yet that the White House no longer views Europe as a reliable defense partner. When asked if he would reconsider US membership in NATO after the conflict, Trump said, “Oh yes, I would say (it’s) beyond reconsideration. I never fell for NATO. I always knew they were paper tigers, and Putin knows that too.”
Mr Trump spoke about NATO’s reluctance to open the Strait of Hormuz, saying, “Other than not being there, it was really hard to believe. And I didn’t make any big sales pitches. I just said, ‘Hey’, you know, I didn’t push too hard. I think it should be automatic.”
The president said, “We automatically went there, including Ukraine. Ukraine was not our problem. It was a test, and we were there for them, and we always would have been there for them. They weren’t there for us.”
Apart from this, relations between America and Britain have also reached a very low level. In the interview, Trump also took aim at PM Keir Starmer by criticizing Britain’s refusal to get involved in the US-Israel war against Iran.
Even Secretary of State Marco Rubio accused NATO of being a “one-way street” and suggested re-examining US membership.
