it’s Sherlock Holmes Recently in the public domain (At least not entirely), and hoo boy, are the creators going to make the most of it – there will be at least three major Doyle-adjacent works streaming in 2026, and I’m probably missing a few. Not that IP was ever much of a hindrance, as evidenced by the hundreds of films, books, porn parodies, etc. released in the nearly century since Arthur Conan Doyle’s death. That is to say, Holmes is quite flexible as a character, and, while I wouldn’t say we need a zippy, Guy Ritchie Sherlock prequel—young sherlock Unique, and a lot of fun. It’s certainly stretching the character to his breaking point, but at least maintains a fair amount of respect for the canon, with the hero Fiennes Tiffin having a nice role as Moriarty alongside Donal Finn.

The Artful Dodger (2023)

It’s all going great until his old mentor Fagin (David Thewlis) turns up on his doorstep, and uses his history to coax Jack into helping him with his criminal endeavors. Thewlis and Brodie-Sangster mesh well in a surprising and funny series that sees Jack torn between his evil impulses and his desire to go straight. Stream The Artful Dodger on hulu.
irregular (2021)
Which seemed like an extremely unnecessary Sherlock Holmes pastiche involving the Baker Street Irregulars (here in its lead) bad sisters‘Thaddea Graham) unexpectedly discovers grief’s dark supernatural mystery at its core. Here, Watson (Royce Pierson) hires the damaged but resourceful Urchin to assist him on cases involving covert activity, as well as help locate the aging and missing Sherlock. Putting Holmes aside, the show works as a dark, Victorian-era stranger things. It was canceled prematurely, but it reached a very satisfactory conclusion. Stream irregular on netflix.
murdoch mystery (2008- )
Set in 1895, the show follows Toronto Constabulary Detective William Murdoch (Yannick Bisson) as he and his team solve Upper Canada’s most shocking crimes. The chemistry between the main characters has powered the show through 19 seasons (and counting), as has the show’s eccentric attitude toward historical accuracy, throwing real-life figures and innovations into a mix that easily includes technology bordering on steampunk. Maybe, a little more comfortable than that young sherlockBut sometimes it’s the perfect environment. Stream Murdoch Mysteries on Tubi.
a thousand blows (2025- )
a spiritual follow up to peaky blinders According to the show’s creator, the show goes back a little further, to the 1880s, when London’s East End was run by an all-female crime syndicate. True story! Erin Doherty plays Mary Carr, the leader of the Forty Elephants squad, who specializes in shoplifting and fraud schemes. In a thousand blowsMary and her gang come up against Stephen Graham’s Henry “Sugar” Goodson (another real-world hero), who is running an illegal bare-knuckle boxing organization. Coming among them is Hezekiah Moscow (Malachi Kirby), a recently arrived Jamaican immigrant, who introduces us to this grim world and its competing factions. Stream a thousand blows on hulu.
Vienna blood (2019 – 2024)
Vienna blood Producer and writer Steve Thompson was the screenwriter for Benedict Cumberbatch. sherlock series, as well as for young sherlock series in question, so perhaps it makes perfect sense that this Edwardian-era crime procedural has Holmes in its DNA. Matthew Beard plays Dr. Max Lieberman, a student of Sigmund Freud who is recruited by police detective Oskar Reinhard (Jurgen Maurer) to provide some psychological insight to the investigation of several gruesome murders. Lieberman draws brilliant conclusions about character traits just like Holmes does with physical evidence, just with a little more action and serial murder. death comes to pemberley (2013)
This is not a sexy, action-packed update pride and PrejudiceBut the source also has a slight impact on the style. young sherlock Does. Adapted from the novel by PD James, one of the most accomplished crime novelists of the 20th century, pemberley We find ourselves several years after the events of Austen’s novel. Darcy (Matthew Rhys) and Lizzie (Anna Maxwell Martin) are content, if not always blissfully, married, and they have arranged one of the balls for which Pemberley is famous. En route, Lizzie’s sister and her husband George Wickham are traveling with Captain Denny. Wickham and Denny have a fight, they disappear into the woods and Denny ends up dead. perry mason (2020 – 2022)
Speaking of Matthew Rhys, there’s this addictive odd duck of a show that takes the Perry Mason of print, film, and television, and places him in a dark and grim Depression-era prequel. Rhys, naturally, is fantastic as a brilliant but hard-working defense lawyer who is going through a divorce while coping with the trauma of the Great War. She is hired to investigate the case of a kidnapped and mutilated child who is revealed to have ties to crooked cops, local business leaders, and politicians in 1932 LA. Juliet Rylance co-stars as no-nonsense legal secretary Della Street and Tatiana Maslany as a creepy publicist. Stream perry mason on HBO Max.
monsieur spade (2024)
An original play by Scott Frank (queen’s stake) and Tom Fontana (homicide, ounce), monsieur spade Hammett’s Sam Spade finds Maltese Falcon fame, living a quiet life in retirement in the south of France. Everything is going well for the former detective – until six nuns are brutally murdered in a nearby convent, the same convent that has been home to Sam’s ward for some time. Naturally, he finds that his past has caught up with him, and he is forced to abandon his idyllic life in order to help uncover the complex mystery that threatens his (very few) loved ones. Clive Owen is great as the bumbling, emotional detective, and the story feels like a fitting sequel to the original novel. Stream monsieur spade on prime video And AMC+.
gentlemen (2024- )
Theo James plays Army officer and Eddie Horniman (a name that is mentioned as often as possible), heir to the Horniman estate (there it is again) who is named Duke of Halsted after his father’s death. She discovers that her father was involved in various criminal enterprises, and her favorite brother is in debt to a drug dealer worth millions of pounds. What else is the charming, military-trained Duke supposed to do except look cool and learn to navigate the violent underworld? Stream gentlemen on netflix.
sherlock and daughter (2025- )
Even though the setup is far removed from anything in the Doyle canon, this CW production probably features the most lit-accurate Holmes as David Thewlis. He’s irritable, stubborn, and emotionally distant, which makes a contrast all the more effective when Amelia Rojas (Bleu Hunt) arrives at his door after the death of her mother and a harrowing trip from California. With the real possibility that Sherlock is her father, she teams up with him to investigate an international criminal gang and hopefully discover what happened to her mother. Clever Amelia soon replaces the missing Watson, though the show doesn’t shy away from the challenges that a young Native American woman would face in Victorian London.
