Fresh snowfall has caused dangerous driving conditions and dozens of accidents in Calgary, Alberta, the second major spring storm in a week.
Environment and Climate Change Canada warned of up to 20 centimeters of snowfall in central and southern Alberta.
A snowfall warning was issued for Calgary as the system moved in overnight and remained in place until Thursday morning.
According to Global Calgary, the storm started as rain and soon changed to snow.
“This morning (Thursday) it started off with a light rain and things just got worse from there,” traffic and weather expert Leslie Horton said, speaking to Global Calgary.
“It arrived around four this morning, started out with light rain and then changed to a rain-snow mix. Now it’s snow. Winds will pick up this afternoon, maybe until dinner time, and then we have a nice day for tomorrow (Friday). So we’ll see some melting Friday and Saturday.”
Calgary police reported at least 163 crashes between midnight and noon, including 22 injuries.
City officials said conditions were normal for this season. Mobility spokesperson Chris McGeachy said, “(This) is not a surprise. March and April are high accumulation months, whether snow or rain.”
