Three people, including a 10-month-old girl, were killed when strong winds toppled a tree in northern Germany during an Easter egg hunt on Sunday, police said. According to police, about 50 people from a nearby residential facility for new mothers, pregnant women and children were attending the event in the forest near the town of Satrupholm at around 11 a.m. when a 30-metre (100-foot) tree fell on the group.
Strong winds caused a large tree to fall, trapping four people beneath it and triggering a major emergency response. About 80 rescue workers arrived after 11 a.m. following an urgent call for help. Tragically, despite their efforts, the 21-year-old mother, her 10-month-old baby and the 16-year-old girl died in the accident.
An 18-year-old woman suffered serious injuries and was flown to hospital by helicopter.
The facility, which is part of the state-funded child welfare system, provides support to pregnant women and new mothers. Grief counselors were sent to help survivors of the incident.
Photos published by Bild showed Easter eggs scattered on the ground and two victims covered with white sheets.
The German weather service had warned of strong winds in the region.
