Lisa Kudrow has made interesting comments about her character in the iconic 90s sitcom, Friend.
Recently in conversation with actress Lily Tomlin interview magazineLisa Kudrow said her Friends character Phoebe Buffay was misunderstood by fans.
Saying that her character “wasn’t stupid”, the actress shared her thoughts on her iconic personality while remembering the public reaction towards her character.
“At the time, it was like, ‘He’s a ditz. How is it that you only play ditzes?’ And I thought, is he a ditz? To me, she wasn’t,” Kudrow said.
When asked who called Phoebe a ditz, she did not name anyone and said, “Everyone. In 1994, it was like, ‘I love her. She’s such a ditz.'”
“And it’s like, yeah, okay, that’s what a ditz was to us. Someone who wasn’t toeing the line.”
He explained that although Phoebe was unconventional, she was certainly not “stupid”.
Explaining why she took her time to personally connect with her character, she said, “At first, Phoebe was very, very distant from me.”
“It took a lot of effort to justify what she said and did. Not in an annoying way—it was fun.”
Nevertheless, the actress admitted that playing Phoebe became almost natural to her over the course of the show’s run.
He said, “Over the course of 10 years, a little bit of him came into me. I became a little more light and read some books on spirituality and things, just to try to understand him.”
