Mr. Grossi stressed that nuclear power plant sites or surrounding areas should never be attacked, noting that supporting site buildings may contain vital security equipment. After the latest incident, no increase in radiation levels was recorded.
Reiterating the call for maximum military restraint to avoid the risk of a nuclear accident, Mr. Grossi again stressed the paramount importance of adhering to the IAEA’s seven pillars to ensure nuclear safety and security during conflict (see below).
The previous attack on Bushehr occurred on 18 March, when a structure about 350 meters from the reactor was attacked and destroyed. There have been no reports of damage to the reactor or any injuries, but the agency warned that any attacks near nuclear facilities risk violating key safety principles.
Earlier in the month, in an address to the IAEA Board at the agency’s headquarters in Vienna, Austria, Mr Grossi underlined the threat of a nuclear incident from military escalation since Iran “and many other countries in the region that are subject to military attacks have operational nuclear power plants and nuclear research reactors”.
