As a beauty editor, my inbox is filled with new news Perfume launches every day. And if there is one fragrance category that is becoming popular unlike any other, it is vanilla perfumes. It’s true, delicious perfumes are being launched left, right and center, with each new scent incorporating notes of the edible variety. However, even as someone with a sweet tooth, I find some vanilla perfumes to be a little too sweet or headache inducing. There are really only a few that I enjoy wearing.
However, when I first discovered Matier Premier Vanilla Powder Eau de Parfum, my nose immediately fell open. I liked the idea of making vanilla more powdery compared to the hundreds of heavy, syrupy vanilla perfumes around. And I’m so glad I tried it, because it has become one of my most appreciated perfumes to date, and it’s probably the longest lasting perfume I’ve ever tried. The eau de parfum initially won me over, but the compliments I received after trying the new vanilla powder extract took over. Roof.
If you’re considering a bottle of eau de parfum or Extrait, scroll on for my full reviews on both, and why at least one of them deserves to be on your shelf, whether you’re a fan of vanilla or not.
Matier Premier Vanilla Powder
Vanilla Powder Eau De Parfum
Needless to say, if you don’t really like vanilla perfumes, stop here. This is probably not the fragrance for you. However, I will say that this vanilla scent is less syrupy and sugary than most of the heavier vanilla perfumes around. Instead, the eau de parfum version of vanilla powder is airy, fluffy and powdery. Shines in the air. It has a touch of saltiness that keeps it from being overly sweet.
Spraying the eau de parfum feels like you’re sprinkling desiccated coconut and ground vanilla on your skin, before leaving a smooth, nose-tinged muskiness on your skin. It’s creamy and sophisticated vanilla, and the projection and lasting power is unlike anything I’ve tried. Most long lasting perfumes I can smell hours later, but this? i can smell it next day. It stays on knitwear weeks Later I even sprayed it before I left for work at 7 a.m., and not only did it get me several compliments throughout the day, but when I came home that evening, I could still smell it in my bedroom. So needless to say you only need one little thing, Small Spraying. And you won’t have to worry about top ups.
Vanilla Powder Extract
You might expect the vanilla powder extract to be enhanced even more, but I actually find it less intense than the eau de parfum. It shares the same long-lasting magic, endless sillage and mouth-watering sparkle as the EDP, but with a more smoldering, toasted vanilla powder. Instead, the addition of warm and smooth Tonka bean melts the skin with a slightly more sensual smoke, as if the edges of the vanilla powder have been caught by flame. This is one of the most sophisticated vanilla perfumes I’ve tried, and I’ve really lost count of how much I’ve been praising it since I got my bottle of it. Again, you only need one or two splashes of this fragrance, as both its projection and the longevity of the eau de parfum and extrait are truly unmatched. And while they both cost £250, this seems a more worthy investment, given how little you need to use to enjoy the scent all day without reapplying.
Decision
Both Vanilla Powder EDP and Extract are fantastic perfumes, and considering how many compliments they have gotten me and their incredible lasting power, I would recommend them wholeheartedly. However, I don’t think it’s necessary to own both. If you love a perfume that catches your eye everywhere you go, this eau de parfum has an intoxicating powdery scent that will float around you like a halo wherever you go. Personally, I find it more powerful than the Xtrite version. However, if I had to choose one of them, my heart goes to Xtrite. It has the same powdery vanilla DNA as the eau de parfum, but with a more hypnotic and sophisticated edge. It’s still incredibly long-lasting and a total attraction-magnet, but it’s smoother and sticks a little closer to the skin, which I like.
If you’re undecided between eau de parfum or extrait, or want to try them out before investing in a full-sized bottle, I’d recommend trying the Perfume Discovery Set or a travel-sized bottle to get to know the scents (a word of warning: you’ll probably want both). But perhaps my favorite discovery has been vanilla powder Hair perfume that envelops your lengths in a hypnotic veil of powdery vanilla that spreads with every stroke of your hair. Believe me, if you wear vanilla powder, you will get compliments, so wear it with caution.
