The record for the hottest day of the year has been on top several times this week.

Forecasters said high temperatures could reach 22C in parts of Britain on Tuesday.

Temperatures could rise to 24C in south east England on Wednesday, before the weather turns cooler at the end of the week.

This is just one degree less than the hottest temperature ever recorded in early April, when the mercury soared to 25C in 2011 and 2020.

The hottest temperatures ever recorded could be seen three times this week.

This comes in the wake of Hurricane Dave, Winds of up to 70mph lashed parts of northern England, Scotland and Wales over the Easter weekend, causing widespread damage and disruption.

A Met Office spokesperson said: “As Storm Dave has now moved away, and this high pressure is building behind it, we are now pulling warm air off the continent.

“It’s one of those seasons where it can change very quickly from day to day.”

The hot weather isn’t going to last long – with big falls down to 10C by Thursday.

“At this time of year it all depends entirely on wind direction,” the spokesperson said.

“For the next few days, we’re going to be pulling in that warm, southerly air, which will allow us to get temperatures into the mid-20s.

“As we head into Thursday, we will see temperatures return to normal for the time of year as we see the weather become more variable as rain and showers increase.”

The Met Office said the warm conditions this week have arrived earlier than expected.
