STOCKHOLM: Swedish authorities have abandoned a tanker they suspected of causing an oil spill because no crime could be proven.Flora 1 was grounded on Friday after authorities alleged there were problems with its registration status and the ship was on the EU sanctions list. But the coast guard said late Saturday that Cameroon had confirmed the ship’s registration and no environmental crimes could be proven, “therefore there are no further grounds to continue the investigation.”European countries have stepped up a crackdown against the so-called “shadow fleet” of ships transporting oil from Russia in an effort to evade EU and other international sanctions. According to ship tracking site Marinetraffic.com, Flora 1 departed from the Russian oil port of Primorsk for Santos, Brazil, on March 31, flying the flag of Sierra Leone.
