TL;DR
- Google is testing a feature called “Projects” in Gemini.
- Similar to ChatGPT’s folders, Gemini will allow users to organize chats into projects.
- While Google has been working on it since December, the feature is starting to appear for users, although it doesn’t work yet.
AI chatbots like Gemini, Cloud, and ChatGPT have become extremely reliable for various tasks. But for those who use them multiple times a day and for many unrelated tasks, you’ll know how unimaginably difficult it can seem to find the right chat. OpenAI already offers folders within ChatGPT, allowing you to store chats in different sections based on their usefulness or similarity. And Google is also working on bringing something on similar lines.
In December, we saw that Google was testing a new feature called “Projects” in Gemini to help organize personal chats. Similar to ChatGPT’s folders, you can add chats to different project folders with Gemini. At that time, we were able to trigger the interface by reverse engineering the Google app on Android.

It looks like the projects in Gemini are starting to roll out to a small group of users. User @BartokGabi17 on X recently shared a screenshot showing the option to add chat to a project.
When you hover the mouse cursor over a specific chat in Gemini’s web interface, you’ll see a three-dot button to open a menu. Once you click the button, you will see options like “Share Conversation,” “Pin,” “Rename,” and “Delete.” The new option, “Add to Project”, appears on the same menu as highlighted by the user above.
Clicking the option opens a pop-up where you can select existing projects. However, we don’t see an option to add a new project here, which suggests it may not be functional at this time.
Another tipster account, TastingCatalog NewsX has further confirmed that the feature is indeed visible in the menu. However, the account notes that this is “likely an unintended appearance.”

Currently, there is no update regarding the rollout of projects in Gemini. However, we found references in the code last month that suggested projects could be renamed to “Notebook” in line with Google’s NotebookLM. Now that the feature has started appearing for some users, we hope Google expands it more broadly soon.
