“Therefore, since the day we heard it, we also pray for you and ask that you may be filled with the knowledge of His will in all wisdom and spiritual understanding, so that you may walk worthy of the Lord, fully pleasing Him, fruitful in every good work, increasing in the knowledge of God” (Colossians 1:9,10).
If continuous improvement is important in our lives, it is most important in our thinking about God. There is nothing more important than making our concept of God correspond as closely as possible to God as He really is. Thus the best thing we can do to improve ourselves every day is to improve, even if slightly, the accuracy of our knowledge of God.
Of course, we cannot know God completely. God is infinite, and even if sin were not a factor, the limited knowledge of creatures could never fully encompass the Creator. Yet, God has decided to reveal something about Himself to us. And we are able, with the mind that He has given us, to understand the things that are objectively true. There are many things we cannot know, but those we can know, we can know them truly (Deuteronomy 29:29). Our knowledge of God can be reliably factual.
But of course, it is also possible for us to have such things about God are not doing Truth! The same minds that can understand truth can also embrace falsehood, and the danger of believing lies about God is indeed the gravest danger. If we ever need to be careful, it is certainly the most important topic our mind is capable of considering. Wherever God is concerned, we need to think carefully so that we think more Clearly.
Our need to improve never ends. As long as there is life, increasing our knowledge of the Creator should be given priority. We cannot afford to become complacent. Paul warned that “If anyone thinks he knows something, he knows nothing as he ought to know” (1 Corinthians 8:2). There is not one among us whose understanding of God does not need to be refined and purified. And perhaps this is the reason why we do not progress more than we do, because we are satisfied with very little. We pick up a tidbit or two of knowledge and we stop our search, when in reality we can know the God whose treasure trove of truth is vast, deep, and strong.
