In the rapidly developing era of artificial intelligence, cyber threats are becoming more obvious and dangerous.
What’s more scary is that OpenAI CEO Sam Altman issued a scary warning of an upcoming “world-shaking” cyber attack.
In a recent interview with axios, Sam Altman talked about how highly advanced AI models are capable of changing the landscape of cybersecurity and biosecurity.
Axios The co-founder asked him directly whether a catastrophic cyber event in the next 12 months was realistic. Altman replied, “I think that’s entirely possible. Yes.”
According to Altman, AI models are becoming increasingly advanced. At this level of advancement, they pose significant risks to cybersecurity. If we talk about the next generation AI modes, they will be more dangerous than ever and once those capabilities are leaked into open source, the game will change permanently.
“I suspect that next year we will see significant threats from cyber that we will have to mitigate as these models are capable and will become more capable in the near future,” Altman said.
The CEO of the ChatGPT manufacturing company also highlighted the growing threat of biosecurity. He said the models are becoming very good at advanced biology and will do wonderful things, such as curing diseases that have killed people for centuries.
“But, someone is going to try to misuse them,” he warned. “The need for society to be resilient towards terrorist groups trying to create new pathogens using these models is no longer a theoretical thing, or it’s not going to be for very long.”
According to Altman, the solution does not lie in prevention; It lies in flexibility. Companies can also mitigate these threats by aligning models and having good classifiers and good security protocols.
