Teahe is in first place A 3-part series on what to do when your job search feels stuck.
Recently, I was coaching two different job seekers – and both were feeling frustrated. He had applied for several opportunities, given a few interviews, and still… nothing was converting into offers. No traction. No speed. If you’ve been there, you know how frustrating it can be. Although continuing to apply is an option, I shared a different strategy – one that often works faster and more effectively than submitting more applications.
Here’s what made the difference:
Reconnect with old friends—and make new ones
Most people underestimate how powerful their network really is.
Statistics consistently show that most jobs are found through referrals – not through job boards. This means you’ll want to spend as much (if not more) time working your network as you do applying online. There doesn’t have to be a feeling of coercion or give and take. In fact, it works best when it doesn’t.
* Talk to people in your neighborhood
* Attend events in your community
*Join groups at your place of worship or local
* Volunteer for a nonprofit you care about
The main thing is to **branch out**.

Even if someone isn’t in your area, don’t discount the connection. Some of the most valuable opportunities come from *friends of friends*. One of my clients recently got a new job after reconnecting with her neighbor while doing yard work. Her neighbor was not in her industry – but a close friend of hers was. That conversation led to an informational discussion, then a formal interview, and ultimately… a job offer.
This is really how it works.
bottom line
If your job search isn’t picking up, the answer is usually *not* applying more.
This is a different approach.
Focus on building real relationships.
Focus on real conversations.
Focus on expanding your reach beyond job boards.
Because often, the opportunity you’re looking for isn’t posted—it’s shared.
