Vice President J.D. Vance has said the Iran ceasefire is a “fragile truce.”
The ceasefire announced on Tuesday halted attacks in the country for two weeks and triggered a relief rally in global markets.
Speaking in Hungary, Vance said Wednesday that Iran’s foreign minister had responded well to the ceasefire but that others in the country were “lying” about the deal.
“That’s why I say this is a fragile ceasefire,” he said. “You have people who clearly want to come to the negotiating table and work with us to find a good deal, and then you have people who are also lying about the fragile cease-fire we’ve already made.”
Vance, who is campaigning for the re-election of Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban, said the US has “clear military, diplomatic and perhaps most importantly, we have extraordinary economic advantages” over Iran.
Vance said, “The President has asked us not to use those tools. He has asked us to come to the negotiating table. But if the Iranians don’t do exactly that, they will know that the President of the United States is not one to mess around. He is impatient. He is impatient to make progress.”
US President Donald Trump threatened earlier this week that without a ceasefire agreement “the whole civilization will die”. He warned that Iran would either have to cut the deal or face massive attacks on its civilian infrastructure.
