If you have one of Amazon’s older Kindle models, you may want to check if your tablet is one of the many included in the company’s list. Amazon recently confirmed that several of its older e-readers will soon lose access to the Kindle Store, including devices launched in 2012 and earlier:
- Kindle first generation (2007)
- Kindle DX and DX Graphite (2009 and 2010)
- Kindle keyboard (2010)
- Kindle 4 (2011)
- Kindle Touch (2011)
- Kindle 5 (2012)
- Kindle Paperwhite 1st generation (2012)
- Kindle Fire 1st generation (2011)
- Kindle Fire 2nd Generation (2012)
- Kindle Fire HD 7 (2012)
- Kindle Fire HD 8.9 (2012)
The decision makes some sense, especially if you consider that some of these devices such as the first-generation Kindle and DX models are quite old at this point. Speaking to the folks at The Verge, Amazon says devices will no longer be able to access new content through the Kindle Store, a change that will begin starting on May 20, 2026. The company says affected users will receive an email a month before the deadline.
It should be noted that previously downloaded and saved books on these devices will not be affected, although if a user decides to factory reset their device (or deregister them), they will lose access to their content. For Kindle Fire devices, apps and services will remain accessible even after the Kindle Store is closed. Amazon says it will offer affected users a 20% discount on the new device for a limited time, as well as a $20 ebook credit that will be on offer until June 20.
