In the first episode of season five, the show’s lead character – A-Train – meets a brutal end at the hands of Homelander.
While the death marks a turning point for the show, Jessie T. Usher, who played A-Train on the series, revealed that it was “a long time coming.”
talking with tvlineThe actor said, “I felt like we were just waiting to see how it was going to play out. He had no allies, he had no one he could trust or manipulate or even ask for help from who would put his life on the line to keep things going for him.”
Asher recalled that he had asked creator Eric Kripke what his vision was for A-Train, to which he replied that he could see “no reasonable path” for the character and that he did not see him “surviving it”.
“To be honest, I don’t know. We won’t deal with it in Season 4, we’ll deal with it in Season 5,” Usher recalled Kripke saying, “In that moment, I knew it was the beginning of the end.”
However, Jessie T. Usher admitted that she was “happy” that her character came so far in the show and made “such an impact and such a difference to the pace of the story”.
Additionally, Antony Starr, who plays Homelander, was also satisfied with A-Train’s fate in the show.
“One thing I love about this show is that it’s never afraid to take big twists and risks, and it’s not unapologetic,” he told the outlet.
He said it’s one of those moments where, “I know some people won’t be happy with it, but it makes good TV.”
