This is part of a 3-part series on how to get rid of feeling stuck in your job search. If you missed it, get started with how networking can unlock opportunities.

If your job search seems stuck, your first instinct may be to apply for more jobs. More applications = more possibilities… right?

    not necessarily.

In fact, one of the biggest mistakes I see job seekers make is to rely too heavily on online applications – without understanding how the process actually works behind the scenes.

    “Volume Trap”

It’s easy to fall into the mindset that if you just apply to enough roles, eventually something will stick.

    But here’s the reality:

    * You are competing with hundreds (sometimes thousands) of applicants
    * Many resumes never get past the applicant tracking system (ATS).
    * Hiring decisions are often influenced before a role is publicly posted

So while applying is part of the process, it’s rarely the strategy that creates momentum.

    what really works

Instead of focusing only on volume, shift your approach toward **visibility and connections**.

This is where job searching becomes more strategic and more effective.

    * Build relationships with people at your target companies
    * Have conversations that lead to insight and introduction
    * Prepare yourself before opportunities are widely advertised

This is often referred to as the **hidden job market** – and it’s where many of the best opportunities reside.

    A more effective approach

In my work with clients, I guide them through a proven process that goes beyond applying:

    * **Soul Searching** → Get clear on what you really want
    * **Research** → Connect, explore and establish yourself in the market
    * **Job Search** → Implement with focus and strategy

When these three steps work together, the job search becomes more targeted and more successful.

    bottom line

If applying for more jobs isn’t working, the answer isn’t always to do more.

    It’s about doing things differently.

Because the goal is not just to get a *job*-
It’s about getting the *right* thing down to earth.

    Want more support?

Ready to take a more strategic approach?

If you’re ready to move beyond application and get real traction, my book, Are You Ready to Love Your Job?, walks you through how to align your strengths, clarify your direction, and embrace your career with a strategy that really works.

Next in the series: How to Network for a Job—Even If You Hate Networking.
