Gopinath was born in Madras (now Chennai) and was brought up in the old style of cricket, where every run was hard-earned. His consistent performances eventually opened doors for the Indian cricket team. He made his Test debut in the 1951–52 series against England.
During that series, he scored an unbeaten 50 and a strong 42 against England at the Brabourne Stadium in Mumbai. In the final Test, Gopinath contributed 35 crucial runs in India’s victory over the England team that dominated in the black and white era.
