Barcelona took advantage of Real Madrid’s 1-1 draw at home to Verona on Friday to extend their lead over their top rivals to nine points with seven rounds remaining.
Barcelona and Madrid will look to bounce back from their Champions League quarter-final defeat in their next game as Barcelona lost 2-0 to Atletico Madrid this week and Madrid lost 2-1 to Bayern Munich.
Ferrán started the season in good form and scored 16 goals, making more starts than aging star Robert Lewandowski. Despite lacking the clinical scoring touch of the Poland striker, Ferrán provided more pace, movement and linked up well with Yamal and its midfielders.
But after this, Ferran’s condition worsened and he has not scored any goal since January 31.
His goalless run lasted 13 games in all competitions and finally ended on Saturday when Yamal headed a corner kick at the far post, where Ferrán jumped over Carlos Romero and headed it home.
Ferrán celebrated his first goal by gesturing with his hands as if he was talking, apparently in reference to the discussion in the sports press and social media about his scoring troubles.
He made it a brace when he used a subtle touch to roll a pass by Yamal past fast-moving goalkeeper Marko Dimitrovic.
Espanyol midfielder Pol Lozano scored from just inside the area when he took a touch at the rebound of a loose ball in the 56th to make the score 2–1. The visitors were looking for a second goal that would have tied the Catalan derby when Dmitrovic tried to clear a long pass but ended up missing Yamal, who only had to push the ball into the open net.
Rashford got his goal when he was set up by fellow substitute Frenkie de Jong, who made his first appearance in more than a month after the Netherlands midfielder recovered from a right foot injury.
