The Punisher, Marvel’s fearsome anti-hero, is set to return to the silver screen with a special film in May.
As for Frank Castle, Jon Bernthal, who played him, says his upcoming appearance will be darker and more brutal.
Notably, the upcoming special has strong roots in the comics, with The Punisher: Welcome Back adapting Frank’s brutal action, but with even more intensity.
Released in 2001, Garth Ennis and Steve Dillon’s comic book Preacher shows the vigilante’s no-holds-barred face, devoid of any hero flare.
Bertenthal, who serves as co-writer in addition to starring in The Last Kill, tells GamesRadar+ that the Welcome Back comic follows Frank Castle’s “discovery and journey of honesty.”
He further said, the audience has to understand The Punisher, who is completely engaged on his mission, which completely lets out the anger inside him.
In “Welcome Back”, Frank doesn’t ask you to love Frank – it asks you to see him clearly, without hesitation. It asks you to see Frank in all his gruesome glory and then find that same primal inspiration within yourself so you can go on that journey with him.”
With high anticipation, The Punisher: One Last Kill will be released on May 12 on Disney+.
