Four Indian-origin men have pleaded guilty in a massive fraud case in Texas that caused a loss of millions of dollars to the US government. Subhala Suresh, Mathews Chacko, Anish Pillai and Mou Kundu defrauded the government by preparing false federal tax returns for their clients, which also included false expenses. As a result, their customers received refunds to which they were not entitled and the federal government lost money. All four had different clients but have been described as co-conspirators in court documents. Subhla Suresh is the latest case to plead guilty. He faces a maximum sentence of three years in prison plus supervised release, restitution and monetary penalties. Suresh admitted causing a tax loss to the United States of between $250,000 and $550,000.
Matthews Chacko
Chacko’s modus operandi was the same – showing false business expenses to reduce taxes and increase returns to which they were not entitled. At times, Chaki and his co-conspirators used false business expenses without their clients’ knowledge. On some occasions, they informed their customers that they were submitting false information. Chacko admitted causing a loss to the United States of more than $3.5 million but less than $9.5 million.Chacko faces a maximum sentence of five years in prison for conspiracy to defraud the IRS.
Anish Pillai and Mau Kundu
Anish Pillai had previously pleaded guilty to filing false tax returns and admitted causing a loss to the United States of between $1.5 million and $3.5 million. Mou Kundu had previously pleaded guilty to filing false tax returns and admitted causing losses to the United States of between $250,000 and $550,000. Both Pillai and Kundu face a maximum prison sentence of three years for helping clients file false tax returnsThe punishment of these four is still pending.
