C. Scott Brown/Android Authority
TL;DR
- Gemini has recently started arriving en masse for Android Auto users.
- A new user has shared a video of Gemini getting very confused about the location of his car.
What’s the worst Google Maps failure you’ve ever experienced? Forgot to download some offline maps before heading to an area without cellular coverage? Do you find yourself stuck in bumper-to-bumper traffic after maps fail to identify a shorter route? While hopefully no one has directed Google to drive straight into a lake, we’re starting to question how aware Maps can be about water bodies in general, after an Android Auto user shared his distressing experience.
Don’t want to miss the best of Android Authority?

Android Auto is facing some growing pains right now, as Gemini begins to roll out widely as a replacement for Assistant. And while it’s certainly improving the driving experience for some users, we’ve already heard from many who are becoming frustrated with the glitchy, unpredictable behavior. This new report from a Reddit user electronic_log8951 Can have cake, though.
On the site’s Android Auto sub, they share their story of failing to get directions to the Tim Hortons they were looking for. To find out what was going wrong, they asked Gemini where it thought the vehicle was currently located. According to the user, they were hundreds of miles offshore in British Columbia, Canada at the time. But try telling this to a Gemini:
As you geography fans hopefully know, being hundreds of miles from the Pacific Ocean would be bad enough, but here Gemini feels like it’s even crossed Canada. Antonym The coast, itself, sits somewhere out in the Atlantic Ocean (better than the Arctic, we assume?).
On the plus side, they share that Gemini also reported a high of 29°C (84°F), which feels surprisingly moderate despite its apparent oceanic location.
Because as stupid as we are considering this error (and it) Is Pretty ridiculous), we also know how many of you rely on Gemini, Android Auto, and Google Maps for accurate information, so it’s very easy to see this as annoying as well. The best thing any of us can do is to help alert Google about any mistakes like this Android Auto’s built-in reporting tools To share bugs with Google developers. So, hopefully our next Android Auto excursion will keep us firmly on dry land.
