Tim David punished for umpire dispute
The RCB batsman has been fined by the BCCI for violating the IPL code of conduct during the match. David has been fined 25 per cent of his match fee and given one demerit point for failing to follow the umpire’s instructions on two separate occasions. The IPL confirmed the decision in an official statement, making it clear that the action was taken seriously despite being classified as a Level 1 offence.
The controversy started in the 18th over of RCB’s innings when David hit a powerful six off Hardik Pandya. The force of the shot changed the shape of the ball and, combined with the moisture, prompted the umpires to call for a replacement. When a box of used balls was brought out, David picked one up and began examining it closely, turning it over in his hands and examining the seams.
Despite repeated instructions by on-field umpires Virendra Sharma and Swaroopanand Kannur to hand over the ball, David held on to the ball for several seconds. This clearly frustrated the officials and the game was briefly delayed. A similar situation occurred once again in the 20th over, which made the matter worse.
The IPL later clarified the exact nature of the violation, saying, “The first incident occurred when the umpires changed the ball during the 18th over (17.2) of RCB’s batting innings. He wanted to see the ball and despite repeated requests to do so, he did not give the ball.” Read the IPL statement.
It further said, “The second incident occurred during the 20th over (19.2), when he again did not hand the ball to the umpires, amounting to repeated failure to follow the umpires’ instructions.” Added in the release.
David admitted the crime and accepted the punishment given by the match referee. According to IPL rules, the demerit point will remain in his record for the next 24 months. Although this is their first offense of the season, repeat violations can result in strict consequences, including suspension.

Hardik Pandya also fined as RCB wins high-scoring encounter
Tim David was not the only player to be penalized after the match. MI captain Hardik Pandya was also fined Rs 12 lakh for maintaining a slow over-rate during RCB’s innings which was beyond the stipulated time.
IPL confirmed the approval saying, “Since this was his team’s first offense of the season under Article 2.22 of the IPL Code of Conduct, he has been fined Rs 12 lakh.” IPL said.
Although these disciplinary actions attracted attention, they somewhat tarnished an entertaining and high-scoring contest. Batting first, RCB posted a mammoth score of 240/4, which is one of the highest scores of IPL 2026 so far. Phil Salt Toofani played an inning of 78 runs, while Virat Kohli added 50 consecutive runs. Captain Rajat Patidar contributed 53 runs as RCB maintained control throughout the innings.
Despite the controversy, David also played an important role with the bat. He remained unbeaten on 34 off just 16 balls, adding the finishing touches to an already impressive total.
In reply, MI fought hard but fell short of the target. Sherfane Rutherford scored a brilliant unbeaten 71 runs to keep MI in the contest till the last over. However, the required rate proved too high, and MI finished at 222/5, giving RCB an 18-run win.
