London — Marmalade is proving a tricky topic in Britain as debate rages over changes to its definition Dear Breakfast Spread Made from citrus fruits.

MPs in the House of Commons expressed concern about the future of marmalade on Wednesday after media reports that British Prime Minister Keir Starmer has insisted on it. closer ties with the EU This could mean an unwanted change to the tart toast topping.

As well as being a staple on the breakfast table, marmalade has held a special place in British culture as a fictional character’s favorite food. paddington bear and a next one Relationship with the late Queen Elizabeth II The two appeared together in a short comedy video during her 2022 platinum jubilee Celebration.

Recent media reports say the preserve – which is usually made from orange juice and peel – will have to be re-labelled “citrus marmalade” under the food and drink deal with the EU.

“What will Paddington think!” Earlier this month, the Daily Mail expressed outrage. Opposition Conservative foreign affairs spokeswoman Priti Patel accused the government of “attacking the great British marmalade”.

Like many “Euromyths” – stories about EU bureaucracy that are always popular in the British press – there is an element of truth to this one.

The bloc has relaxed a rule – introduced at Britain’s request when it was a member – that said only preserves made from citrus fruits could be called marmalade. Other preserved fruits had to be labeled as jams, despite the fact that in some European countries, the name marmalade applies to all fruit preserves. For example, the word for jam in German is “marmalade”.

Following Britain’s exit, the EU ruled that member states could also use the term marmalade for non-citrus fruit spreads, as long as the type of fruit involved is identified.

Britain is planning to align its food rules with the bloc’s rules as part of measures to ease trade after Brexit, hence the conundrum.

Democratic Unionist Party lawmaker Jim Shannon lamented in parliament that it was a case of “EU labeling interfering with our produce”.

The UK government says marmalade sold in Britain is usually labeled “orange marmalade” or “Seville orange marmalade” and is already in compliance with EU regulations.

Food Safety Minister Angela Eagle said that “there will be a small change to our marmalade specification rules”, but “the impact on the real world will be minimal and consumers are unlikely to notice any difference.”

Opposition Liberal Democrat MP Tessa Munt, who called for Wednesday’s marmalade debate, was more concerned about protecting the integrity of this “distinctly British product”.

He urged the government to ensure that “only citrus fruits can appear before World Marmalade on the label.”

“I’ve seen strawberry marmalade and all kinds of pear marmalade in an expensive grocery store,” she exclaimed. “That’s nonsense. There’s no such thing.”
