Former Team India cricketer Vinod Kambli has been battling serious health issues and is recovering from past medical complications, requiring constant care after a serious urinary infection last year. Doctors have also warned of a high risk of brain stroke due to his ongoing neurological problems.
Earlier, Kambli was seen during the Ramakant Achrekar Memorial program in Mumbai about 18 months ago. The former cricketer looked very weak and was struggling to maintain his balance, leaning heavily on his close friend and Master Blaster Sachin Tendulkar for support during this emotional occasion.
I have created a WhatsApp group with Vinod Kambli’s friends – Marcus Couto
According to Hindustan Times report, Vinod Kambli’s close friend Marcus Cueto confirmed that a dedicated WhatsApp group has been created to collect financial assistance. Many friends are contributing anonymously through this private group to help Kambli.
Marcus Couto said, “I have created a WhatsApp group involving his friends and without taking names they contribute a lot financially. His memory is not good, but it has not diminished in the last six months. He cannot remember much, but when something clicks, he remembers. Otherwise, it becomes difficult for him.”
Vinod Kambli has a blood clot in his brain – Marcus Couto
Couto also expressed serious concern over the neurological damage caused by Kambli’s smoking habit. He said that although the former cricketer has given up alcohol, he still asks for cigarettes from passers-by, especially auto drivers, which is worsening his condition.
“Vinod has a clot in his brain, which cannot be removed because he did not take precautions early. And the doctor has suggested that he may have a brain stroke. Because of his strong will, he is doing whatever he can.”
“The doctors are saying the next stage will be a brain stroke. He has stopped drinking, but sometimes when he goes downstairs, he asks passersby to help him smoke,” Couto said.
He said, “He used to ask auto drivers for cigarettes and they would happily refuse, thinking they were helping ‘The Vinod Kambli’. But they don’t realize the damage they are causing. Now the damage is not to their heart, liver or kidneys, but to their brain. This creates an imbalance.”
Vinod Kambli is suffering from a serious brain condition and is showing signs of improvement.
Medical professionals confirmed that Vinod Kambli had suffered a life-threatening blood clot in his brain. Doctors had earlier said that the blood clot could not be removed because he did not seek timely treatment, putting him at high risk of sudden brain stroke.
Former cricketers Sunil Gavaskar and Kapil Dev had offered rehabilitation assistance. Although Kambli accepted Kapil Dev’s offer in December 2024, the plan did not move forward after talks with Marcus Couto failed.
Kambli now spends most of his time at home with his family. His wife Andrea sometimes takes him to care centers in Thane. He finds it difficult to watch TV shows but he loves spending time with his children.
Despite not taking medicines several times due to memory problems, Kambli has shown good physical recovery. His gait has improved and he recently shot an advertisement. He is also hoping to appear on television later this year.
