Iran’s top negotiator has criticized Donald Trump over ceasefire claims – just hours after the US President made a major announcement about reopening the Strait of Hormuz. In a post on social media, Iran’s parliament speaker Mohammad-Bagher Ghalibaf wrote: “The President of the United States made seven claims in an hour, all seven of which are false.”

It was unclear what specific claims he was referring to, but Ghalibaf stressed that the US would not make any progress in talks based on what he described as lies. The Iranian official said, “With these lies, they will not win the war and will certainly achieve nothing in negotiations.” He also warned the 79-year-old US leader that Tehran would close the Strait of Hormuz if the US continued its naval blockade, shortly after the US President said the blockade would remain in “full force”.

Ghalibaf said the vital shipping route would not be considered “fully open” under a continued US blockade.

“With the blockade continuing, the Strait of Hormuz will not remain open,” Ghalibaf said. He said the route would be operated on a “designated route” basis and with “Iranian authority.”

These negative posts came after President Trump shared a series of upbeat messages on his social media platform, Truth Social, after Iran’s foreign minister announced the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz.

In his tenth Truth Social post in an hour, Trump claimed that Iran “has agreed to never close the Strait of Hormuz again”.

“It will no longer be used as a weapon against the world!” Trump said. “A great and wonderful day to the world!” Trump wrote in a post some time ago.

However, Iran’s Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi said the vital oil route would remain open “for the remaining period of the ceasefire” to ships that follow a route “coordinated” by Iran.

Delivering the keynote address at a Turning Point event in Arizona on Friday, Trump claimed he has “ended eight wars” and the number could soon rise to “10”.

The US President said: “This has been the most successful first year ever of any administration in the history of our country, which is acknowledged by all.

“For starters, I ended eight wars and, it may be a little early to say, but if we add Iran and Lebanon, 10 wars would be ended – and many millions of lives saved.”

He also reiterated his criticism of NATO allies, accusing them of not doing enough to support the United States.

Trump said: “If NATO teaches us any one thing, and I hope you all saw that because they weren’t there for us, if it teaches us any one thing: we have to trust ourselves.”
