The United States is technically bankrupt. Over the past 5 years (2021-2025), the US budget deficit has always ranged from US$1.38 trillion to US$2.77 trillion. For 2026, Donald Trump expects the US war “adventure” in Iran to create a deficit of more than US$2 trillion (since Covid) – this would be 12% of GDP. The failure and upcoming rollback of illegal import tariffs is likely to make the deficit even worse. Being a welfare state, its heavy spending on health care (Medicare and Medicaid) as well as Social Security is placing a heavy burden on its public finances.
