A Canadian woman has been killed and several others injured after a man opened fire at a historic site in Mexico. The country’s government said the incident occurred at the Teotihuacan archaeological zone, about an hour north of Mexico City.
According to officials, the gunman killed himself after the attack. Police officials who reached the spot recovered a firearm, a sharp weapon and live cartridges.
At least six people were injured, including four who were shot and two who were injured while trying to escape.
Initial reports indicate that the attacker walked onto the platform of the middle level of the Pyramid of the Sun before taking his own life. Footage shared online showed the gunman advancing along the structure while visitors gathered on the stairs below.
Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum released a statement on social media regarding the shooting and confirmed that the Canadian Embassy had been contacted.
“We are deeply saddened by what happened today in Teotihuacan. I express my deep solidarity with the affected individuals and their families,” she wrote on social media.
“I have directed the Security Cabinet to thoroughly investigate these incidents and provide all necessary assistance. Personnel from the Interior and Culture Secretariat are already en route to the site to provide assistance and cooperation with local authorities.”
