Tokyo(meaningful news) – A tsunami warning was issued for Japan after a powerful earthquake struck off the coast of northeastern Japan on Monday afternoon, officials said.
Authorities confirmed that the earthquake, which had a preliminary magnitude of 7.4, struck at about 4:53 p.m. local time off the coast of Sanriku in northern Japan at a depth of about 10 kilometers (6 miles).
Japan’s public broadcaster NHK reported that tsunami waves up to 3 meters (10 ft) high could reach coastal areas.
Officials urged residents of affected areas to immediately move to higher ground, warning that waves could arrive rapidly and in multiple waves.
“Tsunami waves may occur repeatedly,” the Japan Meteorological Agency said in a statement, advising people not to return to low-lying areas until the warning is lifted.
When officials issue tsunami warnings in Japan, they are drawing on the lessons of 2011, when minutes made the difference between life and death.
During the 2011 Tōhoku earthquake and tsunami, the 9.0 magnitude earthquake generated massive waves that washed away entire cities, destroying infrastructure and overwhelming coastal defenses.
Approximately 20,000 people were killed or missing, and hundreds of thousands were forced to flee their homes, leaving a lasting humanitarian impact.
