Survey shows Samsung keyboards are widely disliked, yet most users haven’t switched

Lots of options exist for Android keyboards, ranging from the default apps provided by your phone’s manufacturer to the open-source, privacy-respecting alternative that many believe is the current standard, Gboard. But one solution that is regularly mentioned, especially by Samsung users, is the Samsung Keyboard.

The default Samsung typing experience packs a lot of features, but its usability leaves a lot to be desired, according to readers and many of my colleagues. Rita El Khoury recently detailed its many shortcomings, including terrible predictive smarts and terrible swipe typing.

Following our previous survey on whether or not you use a Samsung keyboard (60.5% don’t), we ran another survey to gauge general community sentiment towards it. Do you love it, tolerate it, or just can’t stand it? Well, the results are in and I wouldn’t call them a win for Samsung.

Just under 1,800 votes were cast in this survey, and a clear majority of readers have a less-than-favorable view of Samsung keyboards.

About 17.6% of voters use it as their preferred solution, which shows how thin the enthusiastic supporter base really is. However, there are some obvious fans, and that includes longtime users of the app. As reader Rick Eindo writes:

I really like Samsung’s keyboard. It took a little getting used to initially, but now I don’t mind it, except occasionally, the phone will suggest “rhe” instead of “the” and that’s been the case since I’ve had the S22 Ultra.

This causes a large section of readers to shrug their shoulders or tear their hair out.

While 42.3% of respondents “can’t handle it” and moved to another Android keyboard app, 40.1% who use the Samsung keyboard are either “indifferent” or “irritable” towards it. Overall, there are more than four out of every five respondents who are dissatisfied with the experience in some way. This doesn’t bode particularly well for a core app from one of the most important Android smartphone makers on the planet.

What’s surprising is how many readers choose to use the app instead of switching to an alternative. It appears that some people tolerate its quirks in order to access its benefits. Commenter Chris1488Jones explains:

The Samsung keyboard gives me access to Samsung AI features that other keyboards don’t…

Of course, you do. The Samsung keyboard is disabled, but there are plenty of options available.

As a Samsung user myself, I ditched the Samsung keyboard for Gboard, but after using several other options from Swiftkey to Uric to Heliboard. While our readers have already decided that Gboard is indeed the best Android keyboard, don’t just agree with their opinion or ours – download the apps and experience these apps for yourself.
