King Charles and Queen Camilla are scheduled to pay a state visit to the United States in late April, where they will meet with President Donald Trump. The upcoming visit will include a unique garden party in Washington that will break a centuries-old tradition.
The much-awaited visit will take place between Monday, April 27 and Thursday, April 30. It will be the first time a British monarch has visited the US since George Bush hosted Queen Elizabeth II in 2007. Charles and Camilla will attend a garden party at the British ambassador’s residence in Washington DC, but guests are being discouraged from wearing hats.
According to the program invitation received by Rob Crilly of the Washington ExaminerThe event will have a “Hats Not Encouraged” dress code. This also includes a traditional dress code of lounge suits and daywear.
The dress code for the royal garden party dates back centuries, with elaborate hats being a tradition. Women often wear headpieces made of feathers, flowers and beads to enhance their daytime attire, while men are seen wearing top hats with their suits.
The state visit also includes a formal banquet at the White House on April 28. According to Buckingham Palace, the visit will “celebrate the historic ties and modern bilateral relations between the United Kingdom and the United States”.
The late Queen Elizabeth made four official visits to the United States, in 1957, 1976, 1991 and 2007. Meanwhile, Charles traveled 19 times while Prince of Wales.
The upcoming visit has taken months of planning, with decisions about dates and venues being made by Buckingham Palace, the Foreign Office, the Trump administration and the UK Embassy in Washington. It has also attracted attention due to the current strained relations between Britain and America.

Buckingham Palace said: “On the advice of Her Majesty’s Government, and at the invitation of the President of the United States, the King and Queen will pay a state visit to the United States. Their Majesty’s event will celebrate the historic ties and modern bilateral relations between the United Kingdom and the United States to mark the 250th anniversary of American independence.
“The King will then visit Bermuda for Her Majesty’s first royal visit as monarch to a British Overseas Territory.”
