TL;DR
- Google is testing a major visual improvement for Gemini on Android.
- The interface brings brighter, more saturated colors with new icons.
- Additionally, we also see a redesigned sidebar that takes up more space on the screen.
We were able to activate these changes by making changes inside the Google app, version 17.16.21. Although these changes are not live for users, we have an exclusive preview for you.
As part of the upcoming overhaul of Gemini on Android, the existing sky-blue background may be replaced with a more saturated blue with a subtle gradient. We also discovered a different background for dark mode, replacing the current all-black interface.
Beyond the regular chat interface, these changes may extend to ephemeral chat as well as the Gemini Live interface. As part of this improvement, we may see different colored backgrounds for light and dark modes for Gemini Live, unlike the existing color scheme, which only has a dark background.
Apart from the new background, Google may also bring in more minimalist icons, which will add to a cleaner interface overall. Another change we noticed is the new animated buttons in Gemini Live, which appear to be inspired by ChatGPT’s voice mode. If Google chooses to implement this, it will replace the current animation that stretches across the bottom of the Live interface.

In addition to these changes, Google may also be doing some light spring cleaning. First, it can remove the account picker (your Google account picture for changing accounts) from Gemini’s home screen. This change was also seen recently, but with an interface that uses the current icons. However, it has not yet been widely implemented. With the updated interface, the account picker can move to the bottom of the sidebar, and expect to see some major changes in the sidebar as well.
Additional changes to the interface include a new sidebar that not only has cleaner icons, but also takes up the entire screen when opened, unlike the current interface, which takes up about 80% of the screen width.
Along with these, you’ll also see new buttons for “New Chat” and “Share” options in the main chat interface.
However, as with every APK release, there is a possibility that we may not see some of these changes coming to the stable versions. We’ll make sure you stay updated with any other changes Google makes to this interface.
