US President Donald Trump has extended the ceasefire with Iran just a day before it is set to expire, as Pakistan’s efforts to secure a long-term deal continue.
In a post on Truth Social, Trump said that this decision has been taken while a proposal to end the conflict permanently is being prepared.
He said the extension comes amid instability in Iran’s leadership, describing the government as “seriously fractured”, and saying Pakistani officials had requested the move.
Despite the extension, Trump confirmed that the United States will continue the blockade of Iranian ports, indicating that pressure on Tehran remains.
Earlier in the day, the president told a television interviewer that he was prepared to resume military action if no agreement was reached before the original Wednesday deadline.
The plan for a second round of talks in Islamabad has now been postponed. According to a White House official, Vice President JD Vance’s expected visit to Pakistan was canceled following Trump’s announcement.
Vance was to lead a US delegation along with special envoy Steve Witkoff and senior adviser Jared Kushner.
