The United Kingdom has signed a new multimillion-pound deal with France aimed at stopping the rising number of illegal migrants trying to cross the English Channel in small boats. The three-year deal, worth more than £650 million, introduces enforcement measures, including riot-trained police deployments, increased surveillance and strict accountability clauses.

    Why was the deal signed?

The agreement comes amid a steady increase in Channel crossings, with more than 41,000 migrants arriving in the UK in 2025 – the most since such journeys began in 2018. More than 6,000 crossings have already been recorded by the beginning of 2026, increasing political pressure on the UK government to take action.British officials argue that existing measures do not go far enough, while critics say enforcement along the French coast has been inconsistent. The new agreement aims to strengthen border control efforts and disrupt human trafficking networks operating along northern France.

    Main features of the agreement

Under the agreement, France will significantly expand its ground presence and surveillance capabilities. This involves the deployment of approximately 1,100 personnel, including law enforcement, intelligence and military officials, in key coastal areas. One notable addition is a 50-member riot-trained police unit tasked with managing hostile crowds and preventing migrants from launching boats.Authorities will also use drones, helicopters and advanced camera systems to monitor activities and prevent crossings.Maritime enforcement will be stepped up with a new ship and additional officers to target so-called “taxi boats” used by smugglers.

    performance linked funding

A major change in this agreement is the performance-based funding model. Of the total amount, about £150 million (or about a quarter of the deal) will depend on France’s success in reducing crossings. The UK government has said it could redirect or withdraw a portion of the funding after a year if results are not satisfactory, a move aimed at ensuring accountability.

    political reactions

Opposition leaders have criticized the government for committing substantial funds without guaranteed results, arguing that previous agreements have failed to reduce crossings. Some political voices have called for more stringent measures, including changes to international legal commitments, while others have denounced the deal as a misuse of taxpayers’ money.Refugee advocacy groups have expressed concerns that enforcement alone will not solve the crisis. They argue that without safe and legal routes for asylum seekers, migrants will continue to risk the dangerous journey across the Channel.Experts also say dismantling trafficking networks requires broader international cooperation and long-term policy solutions, rather than just increased policing. The new agreement builds on earlier cooperation between the UK and France, including a £476 million deal through 2023 that funds additional patrols. It also complements the “one-in-one-out” migrant exchange arrangement introduced in 2025.Officials say the joint efforts have already prevented thousands of crossings and arrested hundreds of smugglers.
