Sometimes we love to hate serial killers, and sometimes we just love them – a charming, sexy killer seems to be a contradiction that’s so juicy and entertaining that we can’t pass it up. Late-stage capitalism, the climate crisis, and the insurance industry are more likely to kill us, which is probably why we’d prefer to face the statistically less likely threat of a lovable and cunning killer like Penn Badgley’s Joe Goldberg. YouWhich reached a planned conclusion in 2025 after five seasons. But he is not alone! Here, we are looking for series heads who are at least Morally ambiguous, if not downright bad.
Downfall (2013 – 2016)
Jamie Dornan’s sexy young serial killer Paul Spector is not the hero DownfallStrictly speaking, however, he co-led Gillian Anderson’s police superintendent DSU Stella Gibson in all three seasons of this crime drama. Like Joe, Paul is an outwardly normal guy and family man, who you wouldn’t suspect to be a professional women’s stalker and serial killer in Belfast. DSU Gibson is sent from London to help with the stalled investigation, which takes him through physical threats, mindless nonsense and bureaucratic complications in search of the wily Spectre. Ripley (2024)
Patricia Highsmith tom ripley René Clément has an impressive record of successful adaptations of novels dating back to the 50s. not purpleN for Anthony Minghella talented mr ripley-which itself inspired Tommy Wiseau’s cult “classic” room. Andrew Scott is perfectly cast in a series that doesn’t reinvent the narrative, but gives it breathing room for eight hours of deliberately paced neo-noir in glorious monochrome, as poor, orphaned, but ambitious, Tom allies himself with wealthy Dickie Greenleaf (Johnny Flynn) and his girlfriend, Marge (Dakota Fanning). His obsession with the good life soon becomes indistinguishable from his obsession with Marge and Dickie, his studied carelessness always ready to give way to whatever simmers beneath the surface. right (2006 – 2013)
The show that dares to ask: What if a serial killer is a nice guy who mostly just wants to be helpful? Michael C. Hall plays Dexter Morgan, a Miami-based forensic technician with bloody, murderous impulses. Luckily (usually), he’s learned to focus those impulses on destroying villains rather than the more sympathetic innocents who typically become the targets of this type of killer (looking at you, Joe Goldberg). Our Dexter is so sweet that he led the show for eight seasons and is back again new blood, original sinand going on Dexter: Resurrection. Stream right on Paramount+.
Hannibal (2013 – 2015)
By 2013, it really felt as if we had seen too many series of Hannibal Lecter and company. silence of the Lambs Spin-offs and sequels are becoming increasingly tiresome. Yet, creator Bryan Fuller went back to the source material here, once again adapting Thomas Harris’s first Lecter novel with lavish, operatic style and visual talent unmatched on network television (you’re still unlikely to find a more lavishly constructed scene of massacre). Additionally, the deep, sensual relationship between the doctor (Mads Mikkelsen) and profiler Will Graham (Hugh Dancy) adds some great subtext as the two work together to hunt down the serial killer. It ended a little quickly, but three seasons still made for a satisfying meal. Stream Hannibal on prime video.
Glory (2022)
There are at least a few different levels to this GloryA reasonably well-received South Korean import, but rather held together remarkably well despite some wild variations in tone. Most obviously, it’s a revenge drama with a relatively simple set-up: Song Hye-kyo plays Moon Dong-yoon, an elementary school homeroom teacher who’s playing a very, very long game: Her school bullies are now grown up, and their kids (some of them, anyway) are now in Dong-yoon’s care. Right where she wants them. Cleverly, the show makes clear the extent of the past violence faced by Dong-yoon (much of it is hard to watch), and the resulting post-traumatic stress that has consumed his life. The parents of her tormentors were so wealthy that the girls did not face any consequences for their actions, so Dong-eun feels she has no choice. It could be a revenge fantasy, or a straight-up horror show about a suspiciously avenging woman, but, while it’s hard to root for Dong-yoon, it’s also hard to condemn her entirely. Stream Glory on netflix.
candy (2022)
The real-life Candy Montgomery is portrayed by Barbara Hershey, Jessica Biel in this Hulu miniseries and, exactly a year later, by Elizabeth Olsen on HBO Max. jessica biel is so However, the cool thing here is that it earns enough extra points to reach the top of the candy pile. In 1980, Montgomery is accused of the murder of his neighbor, Betty Gore (Melanie Lynskey), following the woman’s affair with Candy’s husband, Alan (Pablo Schreiber). And no less than an axe. Was it brutal murder, self-defense, or a surprising combination of the two? Stream candy on hulu.

Bates Motel (2013 – 2017)
Freddie Highmore stars here as Norman Bates, the Robert Bloch character based on Ed Gein, with Vera Farmiga as his mother Norma in her pre-dried-corpse days. Much media emerged from Alfred Hitchcock’s original article. crazyWith impressively compelling character development and many surprises, it’s better than any right, even if we more or less already know where it’s all going. Stream Bates Motel on prime video.
devil’s time (2022- )
Jessica Raine (call the Midwife) joins Peter Capaldi (its thickness, am a doctor) for a slightly complex but haunting series that features almost every horror story you can think of while still managing to keep things grounded in the two lead performances. Raine plays a social worker whose life is falling apart on almost every level: she’s caring for her aging mother, her marriage is ending, her son is separated, and she wakes up at exactly 3:33 every morning. He’s equally impressive in the role as Capaldi, absolutely terrifying as a criminal linked to multiple murders (sometimes revealed in flashbacks) who can “remember” the future – shades of silence of the LambsBut with supernatural connotations. The Creep Tapes (2024- )
Returning from some of these more morally ambiguous (or at least potentially helpful) heroes to a pure (charismatic) villain, The Creep Tapes Directed by Patrick Brice creep Found footage films in which writer/star Mark Duplass returned to the role of Joseph, or Peachfuzz, or whatever he was calling himself at any given time. Almost an anthology, this show’s charming, funny, sad-looking lead usually gives good people reason to come and interview him on film, just as they stop to document his death. The show maintains the sense of humor of the films, while also maintaining the conviction that we will be sucked into this compellingly manipulative tragic story. Stream The Creep Tapes On Shudder.
