The global gold mining industry continues to exert significant influence on the commodity market by owning some of the largest gold mines in the world. Total production was quite substantial, supported by major mines located in North America, Africa, Asia, and Russia. Based on reports provided by the industry and mining from S&P Global and other mining companies, many of the tier-1 mines produced gold consistently, but others experienced interruptions due to technical problems and scheduled maintenance. The list of the world’s largest gold mines is determined not only by their size but also by their industrial capacity.

World’s largest gold mines: United States, Uzbekistan, Russia and others

    Nevada Gold Mines, United States

Despite its production levels in 2025 falling slightly compared to those recorded in 2024, Nevada Gold Mines still holds the title of being the largest gold mining operation worldwide with an annual production of 2,595 thousand ounces of gold. This gold mining operation is a partnership between Barrick Mining and Newmont and consists of several open pit and underground mining projects located in the state of Nevada.Despite the decline in production, which was caused by alterations made to some pits and underground areas, the Nevada Gold Mines remains the most productive gold mining project in the world.

    Muruntau, Uzbekistan

Muruntau’s production figure for the year 2025 was 1,708 thousand ounces, making it the second largest gold mine globally. The mine is operated by Navoi Mining and Metallurgy Company, and is considered one of the largest opencast gold mines in the world. Over the years, the Muruntau mine has served as an important component of Uzbekistan’s mining industry. The mine’s production capacity increased slightly in 2025 due to efficiency improvements.

    Olympiada, Russia

The gold mine Olympiada under the Polyus company is expected to produce 1,357 thousand ounces of gold in 2025. It is located in the Krasnoyarsk Territory in Siberia. It is known that the mine experiences extreme weather conditions which affect the mining process. Mining operations were lower than the previous year, mainly due to variation in ore quality and production. Furthermore, the mine utilizes highly advanced technology in the processing of sulphide ores.

    Kazink Consolidated, Kazakhstan

In 2025, the company Kazinc Consolidated mined 947 thousand ounces, making it the fourth largest producer in the world. The company’s mine is a huge complex with an integrated approach to extract various metals like gold, zinc and copper. The high position in the world ranking is attributed to increased production capacity and changes in processes at the company’s plants. The company is affiliated with Glencore and continues to improve its business model, which includes selling metals in a different way.

    Grasberg, Indonesia

Grasberg’s yield in 2025 was 937 thousand ounces, although production was down significantly from the previous year. This special operation is run by Freeport-McMoRan in conjunction with its partners who are affiliated with the Indonesian government. Production was interrupted in late 2025 due to a landslide event, which led to the temporary closure of the facilities. It also affected mining and processing operations.

    Almalyk Complex, Uzbekistan

The production of the Almalik Mining and Metallurgical Complex was 750 thousand ounces in 2025, which shows stable performance with respect to its production compared to the previous year. This mining plant is considered one of the largest industrial enterprises in Uzbekistan and also holds a leading position in copper mining. The enterprise includes large-scale processing facilities and mining facilities.

    Blagodatnoye, Russia

Blagodatnoye recorded 736 thousand ounces in 2025, which shows strong growth compared to 2024. Operated by Polyus, the mine benefited from expanded processing capacity and improved ore grades. Throughput levels have increased significantly with the introduction of additional milling infrastructure. Located in Russia, the operation is part of a broader mining cluster that supports continued production growth.

    Detour Lake, Canada

The Detour Lake mine produced 693 thousand ounces of gold during 2025, which was a slight improvement over the previous year’s production. Owned by Agnico Eagle Mines, it is one of the largest opencast gold mines in Canada. This mine enjoys the advantage of high reserve life and huge processing capacity. During 2025, financial performance improved as a result of increased operating performance and rising gold prices.

Kibali, Democratic Republic of the Congo

Kibali produced 673 thousand ounces, a small decline from the previous year. Kibali is equally owned by Barrick Mining Company, AngloGold Ashanti and a Congolese state-owned partner company. It is one of the largest gold mines in Africa and has both underground and open pit mines. Exploration of new ore bodies still continues. Although there have been little changes in production volumes, Kibali still plays a significant role in African gold production and qualifies as a tier-1 asset.

    Ahafo, Ghana

The Ahafo mine had a total production of 664 thousand ounces in 2025 and ranked tenth among mines globally. The mine is primarily operated by Newmont, with the Government of Ghana holding a small stake. Production was lower than in 2024 due to deliberate changes in operations and mine sequencing.
