Questions remain over whether the BC Place roof will remain closed during the FIFA World Cup as natural grass has been installed for the tournament.
According to the Vancouver Sun, the stadium’s retractable roof may need to be closed due to concerns about “variations in lighting” affecting the temporary grass surface.
The move could impact the fan experience during seven games in Vancouver in June and July, including multiple day events.
However, a FIFA World Cup spokesperson told Daily Hive that a final decision has not been made yet.
“The decision to open or close the roof at BC Place Vancouver during the FIFA World Cup 2026 will be made by FIFA closer to match day,” the spokesperson said.
BC Place features a retractable roof since reopening in 2011 following a major renovation. It previously hosted matches with an open terrace during the 2015 FIFA Women’s World Cup, although artificial turf was used that time.
Vancouver is one of 16 host cities for the 2026 tournament, which runs from June 11 to July 19.
Seven matches are scheduled to take place at the BC Place, including group stage fixtures and the knockout rounds, as the city prepares to host a major global sporting event.
