Google isn’t waiting until its annual developer conference to make its own Android case. For the second year in a row, the company will host the Android Show: I/O Edition as a standalone pre-event broadcast, and this time, it’s treating the occasion as its most important Android showcase yet.
The 2025 edition set a higher bar. Google used it to announce Material 3 Expressive, its revised visual design language, as well as Gemini’s extensions to Android Auto, Wear OS, and Google TV. Scam detection capabilities powered by Gemini also made their debut at that show, before I/O covered the developer implications in detail.
The Android System Demo, developed by Sameer Samat from the Android Ecosystem and Android team, created a product launch experience rather than a developer presentation. The current format is expected to remain the same this year.
Google has already confirmed its planned Android 17 release for the I/O 2026 event along with a major AI software update and a significant Chrome update.
The Android show introduces three design elements that are better suited for consumer use: a UI redesign, Gemini features for daily smartphone operations, and upcoming features that will support Wear OS and Google TV.
android show 2026 date and time
The Android Show 2026 stream is scheduled to begin on Tuesday, May 12 at 10am PT, which is a week before Google I/O 2026 which will take place from May 19 to May 20. A since-deleted YouTube video teased the event with the description, “This is going to be one of the biggest years ever for Android. Be the first to get a look at what the future holds.”
The deletion suggests that the video was accidentally posted by Google long ago, but the date and context have been verified elsewhere. It follows the same format as 2025, with consumer-focused Android announcements during Android Show followed by in-depth developer information during I/O a week later.
