An Indian-origin man wrongly accused of being a pedophile in a viral online sting video has described the moment he decided to call the police, saying, “I want all the evidence to be recorded immediately. Immediately.”YouTuber Vitaly Zdorovetsky and his team had publicly accused Akash Singhania of trying to meet a 16-year-old girl in California. The claims turned out to be false. The confrontation was filmed and shared online. It went viral and provoked a strong reaction.Speaking about the moment of heightened tension, Singhania said he asked to see the Snapchat messages being used against him, but was refused. This inspired him to immediately become involved in law enforcement.“I asked to see the Snapchat and they wouldn’t show it to me. And then right after that, I’m pretty sure, when I was like, OK, I need to call the police right away because I want all the evidence documented. Like, I don’t feel safe right now.”He said his priority is to clear his name through official documentation. “And most importantly, I need to immediately document all the evidence to exonerate me and completely clear my name because I am completely innocent. Immediately. And the only solution, in my opinion, to properly document that evidence, was the police.”Singhania said that when officers arrived he cooperated fully, even allowing them to search his phone. During police interrogation he also mentioned his understanding of legal rights.Akash explained the situation: “So I thought okay, I’ll call the police immediately, then came and I picked up my phone and looked at everything, I waived my name like any normal person, if you’ve seen any kind of lawyer TV show or anything, they all say, don’t say anything, don’t say anything without the presence of counsel, like you should know that your rights protect your rights, anything you say will be used against you, you can do whatever. Will also say that can and will be used against you.“He added: “Yes. So, umm, initially I was, I was trying to get them through all the evidence right at the beginning. Umm, the moment I met them, but they said, you need to wait until we read you your rights.”“And so I had to wait at first, you know, I could talk to them about anything. And then I waved my rights and I told them, look at my phone, look at everything. I have nothing to hide.”The incident began when Vitali and his team confronted Singhania in a California neighborhood, claiming he had arranged to meet a minor through Snapchat. During the conversation, Singhania repeatedly denied the allegation and insisted that he believed he was speaking to an 18-year-old man.Video from the scene also shows him asking the group to verify his messages. However, the allegations continued, with Vitali saying at one point, “You’re one of those tech Indians, smart,” while also claiming that multiple Snapchat accounts were involved. The matter worsened by the time the police arrived. According to Singhania, officers from the Santa Ana Police Department reviewed the case and confirmed that they did not do anything wrong. He later thanked the authorities for their handling of the case.Following the backlash, Vitaly publicly admitted the mistake and issued an apology. He said, “We wrongly identified Akash Singhania and charged him. We were completely wrong and we made a terrible mistake.”He also urged people to delete the viral clip, saying, “Our team and I messed up and we’re deeply sorry to Sky. Whoever has those videos should delete them. Snapchat messages messed up, it was wrong time, wrong place.”Despite the apology, Singhania said the damage has already been done, including harassment and damage to his reputation. “Although I appreciate that the mistake has been acknowledged, the impact of the false accusation has been significant. I have endured harassment, judgment, and damage to my personal and professional relationships based on something that has now been proven to be false.”
