White House Press Secretary Carolyn Levitt said on Friday that US President Donald Trump’s special envoy Steve Wittkoff and son-in-law Jared Kushner will visit Islamabad on Saturday morning for talks with Iran brokered by Pakistan.
Speaking to reporters at the White House, Leavitt said without providing further details that the Trump administration had seen “some progress” from the Iranian side in the past few days.
“Steve and Jared will go to Pakistan tomorrow to listen to the Iranians. We hope there will be progress and we hope there will be positive developments from this meeting,” he told reporters.
Reuters earlier reported that Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi was expected to meet in the Pakistani capital Islamabad on Friday to discuss proposals to restart peace talks with the United States.
Leavitt said Vice President J.D. Vance, who led the first round of unsuccessful talks with Iran in Islamabad earlier this month, would be willing to travel to Pakistan to attend if the talks prove successful.
“The President, the Vice President, the Secretary of State, will be waiting for an update here in the United States and the Vice President, I understand, is on standby and would be willing to go to Pakistan if we feel it is a necessary use of his time,” Leavitt said.
Trump extended a unilateral ceasefire with Iran for two weeks at the 11th hour on Tuesday to allow more time for negotiations to end the war. -Reuters
