As one of Who What Wear UK’s resident Gen Z fashion editors, it’s rare that I’m completely charmed by the look of someone outside my immediate age range. Of course, Alexa Chung will always be the It-girl blueprint, and Kate Moss remains one of the best women to do it. But to be stopped in my tracks, completely imprisoned? This is quite unusual. That is, until Charlize Theron enters the chat.

Pictured discussing his latest project in New York, top, Charlize represents what I’m coining a “new age minimalist.” Her outfits retain that understated sophistication we’ve long associated with the aesthetic, but feel distinctly current, slightly edgy, and undeniably cool. Think fashion-forward cargo Bermuda shorts with sleek satin pumps, or a voluminous structured shirt with cute (faux) fur T-bar heels. It’s all set in the familiar color palette we know and love, but there’s a quiet seriousness about each look. Nothing seems like too much effort, yet every detail has been carefully selected. It’s minimalism with an edge, and I, for one, just can’t get enough.
Focusing my attention on her last three looks, I haven’t seen outfits this good in a while, and if it’s 50, I just can’t wait. Scroll through to see and shop the looks.

Style Notes: Amazingly sophisticated, this was the dress that started my fascination. deliberate pairing of larger sizes Saint Laurent faille overshirt with loose, fluid silk trousers, the combination is striking. Yet, it’s the details that enhance it tenfold. From her ankle-cuffed faux-fur T-bar heels (creating a balloon-trouser effect—talent) to her intentionally oversized on-trend sunglasses and slicked-back bob, every element worked in harmony, balancing polish with It-girl edge.

2. Blazer + Bermuda Shorts + Pointed-Toe Heels

Style Notes: It’s not often a look feels so beautiful when the pieces themselves are so directional, but Charlize has done just that. From funnel-neck, lace-up tops to knee-opening cargos Bermuda shorts, this outfit could easily skew overly trend-based and maybe a little Gen Z, but, as with most of her looks, the devil is in the details. The satin, sharp-cut, single-button blazer creates structure, and her sky-high pointed-toe pumps add that all-important polish. Paired with a top-handle Dior Sigel bag, it’s got great styling.

Style Notes: This proves that a healthy dose of décolletage on the red carpet works at any age topCharlize swapped out your traditional under layers T-shirt or blouse for a shiny Victorian collar covered in pearls. Grounding her statement accessory via her slightly flared but immaculately tailored two-piece suit, she retains her signature sense of polish, letting the dainty pearls do the talking. Completing the look with another pointy-toe pump in the same shade, it features a classic foundation with a daring execution.
