Hundreds of motorists were stranded overnight after a snowstorm hit northern Alberta, with several crashes blocking major roads near Fort McMurray.
The crash caused traffic to stop at Highway 63 and Highway 881 on Thursday, according to CTV News.
About 300 vehicles were stranded in two areas on a flyover on Friday, with one of the blockages caused by a semi-truck.
Travel was not recommended on the 100-kilometre stretch of Highway 63 between Crow Lake Provincial Park and Fort McMurray International Airport.
Judith Ivazkiw, a stranded driver, told CTV News: “We’re not sure if this accident is five kilometers, 10 kilometers, 15 (kilometres) away in front of us. And I don’t know how far traffic is backed up, but it’s as far as we can see.”
He said, “We are certainly in a better situation than some people. I know people have run out of fuel, and there are some parents with small children who are short of food, water and fuel.”
“The priority is to clear roads as quickly as safely possible,” the province said. The highway will reopen when it is safe to do so.”
Local officials confirmed that efforts were underway to return stranded residents to Fort McMurray.
