former captain of England Kevin Pietersen And alistair cook He has found himself in another public disagreement, this time over young batsmen. jacob bethel and their decision to continue Royal Challengers Bangalore In ipl 2026. While Cook believes that Bethel should have returned to county cricket for regular match practice, Pietersen strongly defended the young player’s decision to stay in India and learn in the IPL environment.

The debate gained traction when Cook questioned the importance of Bethel continuing in the tournament despite not getting regular chances in the playing eleven. However, Pietersen stressed that being around world-class players in a competition like the IPL can be a huge benefit to a young cricketer’s development.

Alastair Cook questions Jacob Bethell’s lack of game time

Speaking on the Stick to Cricket podcast, Cook expressed concerns that Bethell was spending too much time on the bench and missing out on valuable opportunities to play competitive cricket in England.

According to Cook, regular county matches will benefit the youngsters more than sitting out matches in the IPL. He bluntly stated that Bethel should “go back to playing county cricket” rather than stay in India without getting meaningful game time.

“He should go back to playing county cricket instead of sitting in the IPL and doing nothing.” Cook said.

Cook’s comments reflect a traditional view that match exposure is the best way for a young player to improve, especially during a critical stage of development.

Kevin Pietersen gave a strong response to Cook

Peterson responded immediately and did not hold back in defending Bethel’s choice. Posting on Twitter, the former England star argued that Cook cannot fully understand the value of being inside the IPL setup as he had never experienced it himself.

Pietersen stressed that training with some of the best players in world cricket, sharing the dressing room with elite performers and understanding the pressure of the league provides lessons that cannot be gained elsewhere.

He strongly advised Bethel to stay in India, saying that only experience will make him a better player in the long run. Pietersen’s passionate response once again reflected his long-standing support for franchise cricket and the role of the IPL in player development.

“Alastair Cook has absolutely no idea what it’s like to be in the IPL. What it’s like to be around the best players in the world all the time. So his opinion on Jacob Bethel doesn’t matter at all. Stay in India, Jacob. I know, even if you’re not playing, you’re learning and will become a better player.” Peterson wrote on X.

Therefore his opinion on Jacob Bethel does not matter.

    Bethel supports its decision

Bethel himself has also spoken positively about remaining with RCB despite limited opportunities. In a recent conversation on Sky Cricket Podcast, the young England batsman revealed that being a part of the tournament has already improved his game. He said that because of the level of cricket around him and the opportunity to spend time with top international players, he feels like a better player than he was a month ago. Bethel described the IPL as a unique experience that many people cannot fully understand unless they are a part of it.

He also said that the quality of the tournament due to the intensity and caliber of competition naturally motivates players to raise their standards, even subconsciously.

“I feel better now after the World Cup than I did a month ago, just spending time with the people here and the pure standard of cricket in India and through the IPL. It’s something that a lot of people won’t understand until actually being around a team or a tournament, how good it is when you’re here. It’s a completely different experience. It feels like everyone raises their game almost without really realizing it because of the caliber of the tournament,” Bethel said.

The English youngster’s first appearance has finally arrived

Despite strong competition in the RCB squad, Bethel finally got his first chance of IPL 2026 during the clash against Gujarat Titans in the 34th match of the season. The left-handed batsman scored 14 runs in 10 balls before getting out. Mohammad Siraj. Although his stay was brief, it was an important step in his IPL journey.

RCB won the competition by five wickets, and Bethel’s presence added another layer to the ongoing debate over whether patience in the IPL might be more valuable than immediate game time elsewhere.
