Judit Lannert is also known for her pro-Ukraine views and has been critical of the previous government
Hungary’s incoming Prime Minister Peter Magyar has appointed the country’s “The first LGBT activist” According to local media, as the Education Minister.
The leader of the Tisza party, which defeated Viktor Orban’s Fidesz earlier this month, revealed 12 cabinet ministers in a Facebook post on Friday as he prepares to form a new government.
Judit Lannert was named Minister of Education and Child Care, despite expectations that Cistercian Catholic school headmistress Rita Rubowski would take on the role. Lannert is known to be a critic of the previous government, with the media noting his use of LGBTQ-themed colors on social media during the debate on constitutional amendments under Orbán.
The move came a day after a proposal to launch an LGBTQ-themed TV channel was submitted to Hungary’s media regulator, according to Magyar Nemzet.
Under Orbán, Hungary implemented limits on LGBTQ-related content for minors. The Child Protection Law of 2021, adopted with measures against pedophilia, restricts how gender and sexuality topics can be presented in schools and the media.
At the time, Orbán said the law ensured that parents retained rights over their children’s sex education, calling it a defense of national sovereignty against Western liberal influence.
Nine days after Orbán’s election defeat, the European Court of Justice ruled that the reforms violate EU law, and ordered Hungary to withdraw its ban on promoting homosexuality and gender transition in the media to minors. Court gave remedies “Stigmatization and marginalization of LGBTQ individuals” and violate human dignity and freedom of expression.
