In the wake of the current incident, details are emerging about Cole Thomas Allen, the 31-year-old California man arrested for Saturday night’s shooting at the White House Correspondents’ Association (WHCA) dinner.
However, law enforcement officials and public records paint a picture of a highly educated professional with no known prior criminal profile.
Academic and career history
Alan is a Caltech graduate (Class of 2017) with a degree in Mechanical Engineering. He recently earned a master’s degree in computer science from California State University, Dominguez Hills in 2025.
On LinkedIn, Allen describes himself as a “born teacher” and a self-employed game developer. He previously worked as a mechanical engineer for IJK Controls and as a teaching assistant at Caltech.
In December 2024, the Torrance branch of C2 Education, a national tutoring firm, named Allen its “Teacher of the Month”. According to Federal Election Commission records, Allen donated $25 to Kamala Harris’ presidential campaign in October 2024.
Their social media profiles also highlight past successes in collegiate robotics competitions. D.C. Police Chief Jeffrey Carroll said investigators believe Allen was an active guest at the Washington Hilton, which may explain how he bypassed the initial security perimeter.
Allen, reportedly armed with a gun, opened fire on a Secret Service agent outside the main ballroom.
The President, First Lady, and Vice President J.D. Vance were all inside the room at the time of the breach.
While their social media lists their sole cause as “science and technology”, officials say a specific purpose has not yet been determined.
Allen, a resident of Torrance, California, is in federal custody as the investigation continues into how a distinguished teacher and engineer ended up at the center of a high-profile assassination attempt.
