Washington(meaningful news) – U.S. authorities have charged a suspected gunman in a shooting that interrupted the annual White House correspondents’ dinner that killed Donald J. Trump had to leave the venue and postpone the event, officials said on Sunday.
The incident marks the latest firing of the 79-year-old president, who has faced multiple security threats and assassination attempts in recent years, underscoring ongoing concerns about political violence in the United States.
Footage reviewed by Worthy News shows chaos late Saturday night at the Washington Hilton Hotel, where shots were fired near a security checkpoint outside the main ballroom.
Jeanine Pirro said the suspect faces charges including use of a firearm in the commission of a crime of violence and assault on a federal officer with a dangerous weapon.
Suspect identified, agent safe
Authorities identified the suspect as Cole Thomas Allen, 31, of Torrance, California. He was taken into custody and taken to the hospital for evaluation ahead of an expected court appearance on Monday.
Officials said the gunman fired at least one shot at the security personnel. A US Secret Service agent was shot, but the bullet hit a protective jacket and the officer is expected to recover.
Investigators believe the suspect acted alone, although the motive remains under investigation.
Panic spread as attendees hid
The firing caused panic among those present, including senior government officials, journalists and diplomats.
Secret Service agents escorted Trump, First Lady Melania Trump, Vice President J.D. Vance and Cabinet members from the ballroom as guests hid under tables.
Among those who escaped was Charlie Kirk’s widow Erica Kirk, who was seen crying as she was taken to safety, Worthy News observed. Her husband, a prominent born-again Christian activist, was murdered last year in a separate attack that shocked the Christian and political community.
According to footage and witnesses reviewed by Worthy News, US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, also known as the Secretary of War, among other attendees of the event, was seen being escorted to safety by security personnel as the situation unfolded.
Dinner stopped, security questions raised
The incident abruptly halted Trump’s first appearance at the dinner as president, a high-profile event attended by political leaders and journalists.
The dinner was postponed as officers secured the area and began their investigation.
The shooting is likely to reignite debate about security at major political gatherings, amid widespread concerns over rising political violence.
ongoing investigation
Officials said there was no immediate indication of additional suspects, but a full investigation into how the attacker breached the security perimeter was underway.
Trump later confirmed that the senior officers were safe and praised law enforcement for their quick response.
The latest incident adds to a pattern of threats and violence around high-profile US political figures, raising new concerns about safety in an increasingly polarized US society.
