World leaders have united to condemn the shooting at the White House Correspondents’ Association Dinner (WHCD) as an unacceptable act of political violence.
The international community expressed deep relief that President Donald Trump, First Lady Melania Trump, and high-ranking US officials escaped the incident physically unharmed.
The President was on stage at the Washington Hilton when gunshots rang out from the lobby area. Secret Service agents immediately escorted the President, First Lady, Vice President J.D. Vance and Cabinet members from the ballroom.
Attendees, including prominent journalists and politicians, were forced to hide under tables as law enforcement agencies swarmed the hotel. In response to the situation, leaders around the world issued statements condemning the attack, and emphasizing that violence has no place in a democracy.
The suspect in custody will be charged with use of a firearm during a crime of violence and assault on a federal officer using a dangerous weapon, said Jeanine Pirro, U.S. Attorney for the District of Columbia.
In this regard, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney said on the social platform
“Political violence has no place in any democracy and my thoughts are with all those who have been shaken by this disturbing incident.”
“It’s good that President Trump and his wife are safe after recent events,” said Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum, leader of America’s southern neighbor.
Sheinbaum said, “We send them our respects. Violence should never be the path.”
Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese also shared his comments in the wake of the recent incident: “I am pleased to hear that all attendees were safe.”
DC Police Chief Jeffrey Carroll confirmed that the suspect was heavily armed with a shotgun, a handgun, and several knives. Preliminary evidence indicates the suspect fired at least one shot during the confrontation.
Investigators believe the suspect was an active guest at the Washington Hilton, which may have allowed him to get close to the secure event area. D.C. Mayor Murry Bowser said the suspect acted alone when he ran past Secret Service agents in the hotel lobby.
Cole Tomas Allen, 31, is currently in custody and undergoing medical and psychiatric evaluation at a local hospital.
