The Shreyas Iyer-led team, Punjab Kings, has been showcasing its batting masterclasses throughout this season; However, despite a fast start, PBKS managed to put up a fightable total for their side against the Rajasthan Royals attack, which did not allow them to dominate the middle overs.
Punjab Kings returned to their home ground in Mullanpur, New Chandigarh, which has been their home ground since last season. Punjab Kings had registered a spectacular win in the last game at the Arun Jaitley Stadium, where they broke their own record for the most successful run chase while chasing a mammoth target of 265 runs.
Keeping their undefeated streak intact, the Shreyas Iyer-led side is currently on top of the points table, just 1 point short of 14 points due to rain favoring Kolkata Knight Riders at the Eden Gardens.
This was the only game that PBKS finished without those 2 points. Last season’s runners-up are just one win away from securing their spot in the top four and hence are through to the knockouts of this edition of the competition.
Marcus Stoinis’ carnage helps Punjab Kings flourish through a promising finish
Left-handed batsman Priyansh Arya has been a dangerous striker in the powerplay, often striking over 250 in the restrictions. However, on this occasion, he was troubled by lethal fast bowler Joffra Archer, who also dismissed him after his innings of 29 runs in 10 balls.
Prabhsimrah Singh looked in good form and added runs for the Kings unit by scoring another half-century, while Cooper Connolly also played a handy inning of 30 runs. With captain Shreyas Iyer struggling in the middle stages, their run count fell short of the expected total.
However, Marcus Stoinis, who was promoted in the absence of Shashank Singh, played a brilliant innings in his first major innings for the Kings. Stoinis thrashed batsmen like Nandre Berger, Joffra Archer and Brijesh Sharma in the last three overs and took his team to a strong score of 222 runs in 20 overs.
Lots of defeats end for PBKS bowlers as Punjab Kings suffer first defeat of the season
Punjab Kings’ batting has been exceptional in this edition of the competition, and hence, they can continue their winning streak so far this season. However, they suffered their first defeat of the season, ending their six-match winning streak.
Shreyas Iyer’s team struggled to maintain the flow of runs in the powerplay, with young Vaibhav Suryavanshi scoring many runs in the powerplay. Even after his dismissal, Yashasvi Jaiswal continued his attack with the bat.
Punjab Kings spinners Harpreet Brar and Yuzvendra Chahal helped them in the middle overs as they dismissed three batsmen and did not leak a huge amount of runs. However, the fast bowling trio conceded a lot of runs, with Arshdeep Singh conceding the most runs.
Donovan Ferriera completed the chase in some style and was named player of the match for his match-winning half-century. However, Impact player Shubham Dubey also provided excellent support to him by scoring 31 runs off just 12 balls.
Shreyas Iyer praised RR batsmen for their brilliant innings, “Congratulations to the batsmen.”
PBKS captain Shreyas Iyer said, “I thought 224 runs on the board was a great score. Congratulations to the batsmen, the way they came and went against the bowlers. I thought it was an exceptional performance, especially on this wicket, which was a bit difficult and slow.”
“And I think we lagged a little bit in our bowling, in terms of execution. We had planned to bowl a lot of slow balls, pace and yorkers. I think we lagged a little bit there. Also, they had tremendous partnerships in the middle, especially Ferreira and Shubham Dubey came in and scored important runs at the end,” he said.
“I think it’s important that we stick to the things that we’ve been doing, the routines and procedures that we’ve been following the whole time. We had a match, we had to travel and then come and play another game.”
“So I think the body was also a bit tired, but that may not be the reason here. But we have a few days to freshen up, go back to the drawing board and come back stronger,” he said when asked what could get them back to winning ways.
