- US Geological Survey has identified 2.3 million metric tons of lithium in the Appalachian region
- Discovery could replace more than 300 years of US lithium imports at current levels
- Findings support renewed efforts for US mineral independence and energy security

(Qualified News) – A major new study from the U.S. Geological Survey has revealed that the Appalachian region may contain a vast and largely untapped supply of lithium – providing a strategic opportunity for the United States to regain mineral independence in an increasingly competitive global marketplace.
According to USGS research published in Natural Resources Research, there is an estimated 2.3 million metric tons of undiscovered, economically recoverable lithium in the eastern United States. At current import levels, this amount could replace more than three centuries of US lithium imports – an extraordinary finding as demand for the critical mineral continues to grow.
The southern Appalachians, particularly in the Carolinas, are believed to contain approximately 1.43 million metric tons of lithium oxide, while northern deposits in Maine and New Hampshire contain an additional 900,000 metric tons. These resources are found in pegmatites – large-grained rocks formed under intense heat and pressure during the formation of the Appalachian Mountains 250 million years ago.
USGS Director Ned Mamula emphasized the national significance of the discovery, noting that the findings could play an important role in strengthening America’s supply chain resiliency. “This research shows that there is enough lithium in the Appalachians to help meet the nation’s growing needs,” Mamula said, pointing to the importance of responsible mining, workforce development and policy reform in unlocking these resources.
Lithium is a cornerstone of modern technology, powering everything from smartphones and laptops to electric vehicles, military systems, and large-scale energy storage. The United States currently relies heavily on imports – particularly from countries like Australia and China, which dominate global refining and consumption.
The implications of this discovery are staggering. Estimated Appalachian lithium reserves could produce:
1.6 million grid-scale batteries capable of stabilizing power systems
130 million electric vehicles
180 billion laptops—equivalent to 1,000 years of global supply
500 billion cellphones—about 60 for every person on Earth
As global lithium demand is projected to double by 2029, supply security has become a top priority not only for governments but also for major technology firms.
The USGS study also underscores the complexity of mineral estimation. Although current figures represent a 50% confidence level, there is still the potential for significantly larger deposits and the reality that not all resources may be economically viable. Still, the research is based on decades of geological study, including historic mining operations in the Kings Mountain area of North Carolina.
The discovery comes at a critical moment, as policymakers seek to “unleash American energy” and reduce dependence on foreign resources. It also reflects a broader movement toward stewardship – recognizing the blessings inherent within the land.
At a time of uncertainty on the global stage, the findings point to a hopeful reality: The resources needed for the future may already exist beneath America’s own soil. With intelligence, integrity and responsible development, this could be a turning point for the country not only economically, but also strategically.
