stand firm in your faith
“You will keep in perfect peace those whose hearts are steadfast, because they trust in you.” -Isaiah 26:2-4
Have you ever heard the saying, “Slow and steady wins the race”? Or, have you ever heard the story of the rabbit and the tortoise? I’m sure you’ve heard of one or both of these. This principle of being consistent and grounded is very important in living our faith!
Our maturity as Christians is often revealed as we go through life’s obstacles. This is our proving ground for development. Dr. Sam Peoples said, “The circumstances of life, the events of life, and the people around me in life, do not make me what I am, but reveal how I am.” Will we bend or break? A person who is firm in his faith is unlikely to break when a storm comes. They are strongly rooted in what they believe in. Even though the winds may blow and the rain may rain, and even though they have a difficult moment or two, they hold on to the truth. Emotional maturity is linked to this – when we are determined we are less likely to get out of control. We know God has it covered – we look for His promises that apply to each situation.
“They are like a man building a house, who dug deep and laid the foundation on the rock. When the flood came, the stream broke against that house, but was not able to shake it, because it was well built.” -Luke 6:48
At any given moment, how we feel about our life or about a situation is only temporary. This won’t do. We will not take our emotions with us to heaven either. Although they are very real in the moment, the feelings usually don’t last more than a day. What remains is our love for people, our love for God; We showed others the kindness and love of Jesus. Artist Jewel said it right: “In the end, all that matters is kindness.”
“And now these three remain: faith, hope, and love. But the greatest of these is love.” -1 Corinthians 13:13
